Have you ever wondered what a tax apprenticeship is and where it could take you in your career?  Read on to find out more…

What is a tax apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a genuine job with the opportunity to gain a professional qualification as well as to develop the transferable skills that employers look for in their future employees.  We refer to these as knowledge, skills and behaviours and each have equal importance during your apprenticeship.  Within tax there are two options available:

Level 4 Taxation Technician Apprenticeship

You will study for the ATT qualification as well as gaining valuable skills and behaviours such as Communication, Team Working and Adaptability.

Level 7 Taxation Professional Apprenticeship

You will study for the CTA qualification as well as gaining valuable skills and behaviours such as Business Insight, Leadership and Professional Scepticism.

Whichever route you choose to take, you will be fully supported by your employer – gaining hands-on experience and developing the practical skills required for a successful career in tax, alongside studying towards a highly-respected tax qualification whilst earning a competitive salary.

Where can it take me?

Tax apprenticeships have been designed by employers in the profession based on the experience and skills they need from their employees, so you can have the confidence that you will become a well-rounded tax adviser who can really add value to a business.  A tax apprenticeship is the launchpad for a long and successful career and can open up a wealth of opportunities.

From being part of an in-house tax department to working in an accountancy and tax practice; from maintaining the breath of knowledge to specialising in a niche area, a tax apprenticeship will help you develop the skills to apply your expertise in an array of real situations.

Alternatively, you may like to teach tax to other students, explore the world of tax research and writing, or even apply your knowledge to help develop technological solutions for tax practitioners.

You can also continue your tax studies and there are natural next steps after an apprenticeship.  For example, you can continue with CTA after doing ATT, or even specialise in international taxation and study ADIT after completing the CTA qualification.

An apprenticeship provides portability between roles, jobs, employers and industries.  Whether your long-term future is in tax or elsewhere, it enables you to develop skills and behaviours that are transferable and will stand you in good stead for your future career regardless of which direction you choose to go.
