VAT Compliance Diploma
A first qualification in VAT
Diplomas are online examinations, designed to build on little, or no, previous knowledge and develop your expertise in specific areas of tax. They are ideal if you work in tax, in industry, commerce or the professions. And they are perfect if you have an interest in tax and are looking for an entry-level qualification.
Professional development, personal speed
The modular format splits each diploma into four manageable chunks of learning and testing, followed by a final full diploma exam. So you can work at your own pace.
With Tolley Diploma Training you get:
- Successful tax exam training from tax specialists
- A mix of online and distance learning courses
- Targeted study packages to help focus your studies

These are the examination details:
Diplomas consist of four modular tests and a final full diploma exam. All of the modular tests and final full diploma exam are carried out online via the Tolley Online Exam Centre available through Tolley Online Academy. The modular tests are one hour long and the final full diploma exam is 90 minutes with all questions being a multiple choice style. You can sit the exams at any time that suits you.
Whilst it is only the result of the final full diploma exam that entitles students to receive the actual Diploma certificate, you must pass all of the four modular tests before you are allowed to sit the final full diploma exam.
VCD Renewal Exam
The VAT Compliance Diploma is offered by the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) and is valid for two years. After this period you will need to contact the ATT to apply for a renewal. You will need to confirm with them that you have kept up-to-date with your Continuing Professional Development requirement. This is done through an online multiple choice exam accessible through the Online Exam Centre. The Association will inform you that you need to take the online test roughly 2 months before your renewal is due.
The renewal exam consists of 24 questions, and you need to answer 12 correctly to pass. Should you not pass at the first attempt, you can sit again. You only pay one fee, regardless of the number of attempts at the renewal exam.
For further details and to register with the Association please see the Association's website at https://www.att.org.uk/students/att-vat-compliance-diploma

The chapters in your study manual are split into modules A, B, C and D. This is clearly detailed on the contents pages of your manual.
After studying the chapters within a particular module you will have the technical knowledge to attempt the online mock assignment followed by the modular test.
You can access the online mock assignments and modular tests on the Online Exam Centre through the Online Academy. The online mock assignments comprise 30 multiple choice questions for each module. You should attempt these before attempting the modular test. The online mock assignments replicate the modular test environment.
We recommend you study the modules in the correct order and only proceed to the next module once you have successfully completed both the online mock assignment and the modular test of the particular module you have been studying.
Each modular test is one hour long and comprises 30 multiple choice questions. The questions only test the material in the chapters for the module being examined. It is important that you allocate an uninterrupted hour to the examination as you will be "timed out" at the end of the hour.
If you fail to achieve the required mark we recommend you revisit your study manual and consolidate your knowledge further. You may take a modular test as many times as you wish, but not within 4 weeks of an unsuccessful attempt.
Full final diploma examination
After successful completion of all four modular tests you are entitled to sit the final full diploma exam.
The final full diploma exam is also an online multiple choice exam that you access from the Online Exam Centre.
The final full diploma exam is 90 minutes long and comprises 45 multiple choice questions. The questions can cover any of the material examined within the four modules. It is important that you allocate an uninterrupted 90 minutes to the examination as you will be "timed out" at the end of that time.
If you fail to achieve the required mark in the final full diploma exam we recommend you revisit your study manual and consolidate your knowledge further.
You may only take the final full diploma exam three times and these attempts must be within two years of passing the fourth modular test. The 45 questions are selected at random from a bank of questions. If you sit the exam a second time it will be quite different to your first attempt.
There is also an online full mock exam as a final practice before sitting the final full diploma exam. You can access the full mock exam from the same Online Exam Centre. The full mock exam covers all four modules and comprises 30 questions. You should attempt this before attempting the final full diploma exam.
