    Mike Thexton has been talking and writing about tax since passing the examinations of ICAEW in 1983 and CIOT in 1984. He currently spends his working time presenting regular VAT updates for the specialist staff of several large and medium-sized firms of accountants, writing the Quarterly Online VAT Update for LexisNexis, and providing tax and accountancy services to personal and small company clients.

    Mike won the Taxation Magazine Tax Writer of the Year Award 2010 for his articles in the professional press, leaflets for the clients of accountancy firms and technical material on VAT. Among the pieces submitted to the judging panel were answers to Taxation magazine's Readers' Queries, concealed behind a mysterious pseudonym.

    He has also published a book, "What happened to the hippy man?", about his experience at the centre of the hijacking of PanAm 073 in Karachi in September 1986. He is working on "VAT the heck!", a collection of weird and wonderful stories from the world of VAT, and looking for a publisher…

    ROBERT JAMIESON MA FCA CTA (Fellow) TEP

    Educated at Fettes and Pembroke College, Cambridge where he studied Moral Sciences, Robert joined what was then Cooper Brothers & Co and qualified as a chartered accountant in 1972. He subsequently moved to Financial Training where he ran their specialist tax course and tax consultancy divisions. He passed the ATII examination in 1979 and received his FTII (now CTA (Fellow)) in 1984 for a thesis on family companies. 

    After 20 years with Financial Training, Robert decided to return to full-time practice and became a partner in Adam Broke & Co in 1992. This firm merged with Mercer & Hole in October 2001 where he was a partner for 12 years.

    Outside his work, Robert joined the Council of the Chartered Institute of Taxation in 1993 and became their President in May 1999. He was on the Editorial Board of the weekly magazine "Taxation" for 21 years until 2011 and, in 2007, he joined the Editorial Board of "Simon's Taxes". In 2013, he became the Capital Gains Tax correspondent for "Private Client Business".

    Robert is an occasional commentator on private client tax matters for Legal Network Television. In May 2008, he chaired and co-presented one of LexisNexis' inaugural webinars entitled "Topical Capital Gains Tax Issues". He is now a regular webinar presenter for a variety of organisations.

    He joined STEP in 2009.

    Rebecca is a Chartered Accountant in practice, but is best known as a lecturer and author on a variety of tax matters.

    She was named Best Tax Lecturer at the Taxation awards in 2007, and is widely recognised for her down to earth, practical approach to tax issues.

    She lectures for a wide range of training providers and professional firms and has delivered lectures for HMRC and HM Treasury on the impact of tax changes for smaller businesses.

    She serves on the Administrative Burdens Advisory Board which challenges HMRC on the subject of business burdens, and is currently Chair of the Digital Advisory Group which is supporting HMRC in understanding the needs of small businesses and their professional advisers in the move to digital.

    She has won a number of awards, including HMRC's External engagement award in 2011 and was awarded an MBE in the Queen's birthday honours list in 2012 for public service and services to the tax profession.

    His 32+ years of experience start at the Inland Revenue in Hull. After completing his ATT and CTA with PKF, he subsequently worked at KPMG and UHY prior to managing the business tax team as a director at Garbutt + Elliott. Rob is now Tax Director at the independent tax consultancy, Crane Dale Tax.

    He is a regular author for Tolley publications, including Taxation magazine, and Tolley annuals covering Capital Allowances, Property Tax, Tax Planning , and Taxwise annuals.     Keith M Gordon MA(Oxon) FCA CTA(Fellow) is a barrister practising from Temple Tax Chambers in London. He previously practised as a chartered accountant and chartered tax adviser. His practice covers all areas of tax and also related areas including partnership disputes and professional negligence. Keith also lectures and writes extensively won the Tax Writer of the Year category in the 2013 LexisNexis Taxation Awards. He was also the Chartered Tax Adviser of the Year in the 2009 awards.


    Keith's cases include Jones v Garnett (the 'Arctic Systems' case) where he was the junior barrister for the successful taxpayer in the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords.  More recently, he was instructed by the taxpayers in HMRC v Charlton (discovery), Cotter v HMRC (meaning of tax return), Thomson v HMRC (meaning of trade) and the residence cases of Grace and Tuczka.


    Keith is an active member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation. He has been a Council member since 2009, sits on a number of technical sub-committees and until June 2008 was co-chairman of the London Branch.  He is a member of the Taxation and LexisPSL editorial boards.
