She is a specialist in contentious discrimination matters and has significant experience in handling high value contentious claims for employers and senior individuals. Emma acts for employers, employees and trade unions. Her client base is broad, both in terms of the range of work and the sectors in which they operate. Amongst these clients are a number of growing, dynamic businesses (including UK start-ups), as well as long established financial institutions, and senior executives.

    Emma speaks regularly on diversity issues, edits the diversity sections of Lawtel Employment Precedents and Company Policy Documents and certain diversity sections of Tolley Guidance Employment Tax online, and regularly contributes to article in HR and legal publications as well as comments in the national press on diversity issues.

    Experience

    • Successfully defended a tribunal claim of race and religious discrimination against a household name private members club. Added complications arose as the matter was reported in the press before judgment was given. An appeal to the Employment Appeals Tribunal was rejected.
    • Advised and represented a large London retailer in relation to a multi-discrimination employment tribunal complaint (direct, indirect, victimisation and harassment based on race and religion). The claim was complicated by the variety of allegations and the worker's status; there were three preliminary hearings before a full merits hearing was listed. There were also four named Respondents to the claim. Successfully settled the action for a nominal sum, with agreement that all allegations were retracted and not repeated despite the action continuing against the other Respondents.
    • Advised and negotiated service agreements for the senior management team of the seller on a multimillion pound share sale of a UK business.
    • A major legal victory for a pilot employed by a household name airline, in a landmark case against the airline for indirect age discrimination. The decision has industry-wide ramifications for airlines and other organisations which provide a combination of long-term permanent health insurance or similar income protection payments via third party and self-insurance.

    Rebecca is a Chartered Accountant in practice, but is best known as a lecturer and author on a variety of tax matters.

    She was named Best Tax Lecturer at the Taxation awards in 2007, and is widely recognised for her down to earth, practical approach to tax issues.

    She lectures for a wide range of training providers and professional firms and has delivered lectures for HMRC and HM Treasury on the impact of tax changes for smaller businesses.

    She serves on the Administrative Burdens Advisory Board which challenges HMRC on the subject of business burdens, and is currently Chair of the Digital Advisory Group which is supporting HMRC in understanding the needs of small businesses and their professional advisers in the move to digital.

    She has won a number of awards, including HMRC's External engagement award in 2011 and was awarded an MBE in the Queen's birthday honours list in 2012 for public service and services to the tax profession.

    Nicole started her career working in the tax division at Ernst & Young, where she passed her ACA and CTA (ATII) examinations.

    Nicole enjoyed studying so much she thought it might be ‘fun’ to experience a career at the front of the classroom and joined BPP as a tax tutor in 2000. She loves the challenge of breaking down a complex concept and explaining it in understandable terms.

    At BPP Nicole taught tax papers for all accountancy qualifications as well as for ATT and CTA. She also produced teaching material for tax courses.

    Nicole was responsible for managing relationships with key tax courses’ clients and in particular designing, managing and teaching on bespoke client courses.

    As well as having extensive experience delivering face to face courses, Nicole has much experience of teaching online live courses, pioneering the use of interactive tools to engage students in remote study.

    Nicole joined Tolley Exam Training in 2017 and teaches mainly in our London centre. She is also subject manager for ATT Paper 1 and CTA APS Individuals and as such is involved in the updating of material for these papers and giving exam feedback. Nicole has also written a number of articles for Taxation magazine.

    Lisa-Jane joined Tolley in 2010 to write and lecture on corporate and international tax matters, with a particular focus on the papers for the Advanced Diploma in International Tax (ADIT) offered by the UK Chartered Institute of Taxation.

    A graduate from the University of St Andrews, Lisa-Jane completed her Masters Degree in Law at City University and went into private practice as a barrister (Lincoln's Inn) before training in tax with KPMG at their Tax Business School. Once qualfied as a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) Lisa-Jane worked as a tax lawyer in the City, undertaking predominantly cross-border transaction work and banking, before joining EY in 2004 to work offshore in the Channel Islands. Whilst working there she sat the ADIT exams and gained her international tax diploma.

    When Lisa-Jane moved back to London she decided to use her overseas experience by teaching the Principles of International Tax, Transfer Pricing, UK and European Union options for the ADIT qualification, as well as the AT TOMC and APS TOLC papers for the CTA exams. Lisa-Jane also writes for the Tolley Corporation Tax Annual.

    Biography:

    Robert qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1979 with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co and decided to specialise in tax. Late in 1980 he left to join Financial Training in Newcastle teaching tax at all levels plus a few other topics for good measure.

    After a few years he decided to go back into the profession firstly as a Senior Tax Manager with EY and later as a Group Tax Manager with Pannell Kerr Forster. Both firms made good use of Robert’s outstanding lecturing ability involving him in both local and national in-house training and client seminars.

    In 1992 Robert set up on his own; providing accounting services and tax advice to local professionals, individuals and companies. It was not long before his lecturing skills were called upon again for both exam based training and CPD lectures. By 2000 Robert was in such demand as a freelancer he had to fully focus on lecturing and could take with him the invaluable experience of being in practice.

    Until it was discontinued in 2006 Robert ran the entire CTA residential course at Reed College enjoying much success and several prizewinners: made more rewarding because most students were from small regional firms. Robert continues to teach students at various levels for different tax examination bodies both in the UK and in Europe as well as writing and delivering CPD lectures in the UK.

Previously he was Partner – Assurance & Head of Islamic Finance (Pakistan & Afghanistan) at Ernst & Young Ford Rhodes Sidat Hyder - A member firm of Ernst & Young. He is a Fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP).

    At AAOIFI, he is responsible primarily for leading the process of development of accounting, auditing, governance and ethics standards for the global Islamic finance industry, besides managing the overall affairs of the institution as the organization’s head.

    Rob - CTA (Fellow) - is a cross-tax advisor with a particular focus on property tax planning, and business structure planning for OMB’s. He provides tax advice to other accounting firms, balancing commerciality, ethics, and understanding complexity.

    His 32+ years of experience start at the Inland Revenue in Hull. After completing his ATT and CTA with PKF, he subsequently worked at KPMG and UHY prior to managing the business tax team as a director at Garbutt + Elliott. Rob is now Tax Director at the independent tax consultancy, Crane Dale Tax.

    He is a regular author for Tolley publications, including Taxation magazine, and Tolley annuals covering Capital Allowances, Property Tax, Tax Planning , and Taxwise annuals. He is also consultant editor of the online Tolley Guidance OMB module. He contributes as a virtual member to the CIOT Property Tax and OMB technical committees.

    Rob works remotely from Vancouver in Canada.
