    Biography:

    Phil Vernon is the Head of Business Rates projects at PwC, and has been advising clients on local property tax issues for the last 15 years. He was formerly Head of Business Rates for Liberata UK, who provided an outsourced revenues service for Sheffield City Council.

    At PwC, Phil provides public and private sector clients with advice on complex rating matters, provides legal analysis on points of law and advises clients on how rating practice interacts with rating law. Phil also assists corporate clients in their rating appeals, up to and including Valuation Tribunals and the Upper Tribunal (Lands Chamber).

    Phil has been an Honors member of the Institute of Revenues, Rating and Valuation (IRRV) since 2002 and has 30 years experience in local taxation law and practice.

    Biography:

    Neil has worked in VAT for 33 years. He spent 14 years as an inspector in HM Customs and Excise before setting up his own tax and accounting practice in 1997. He provides VAT consultancy advice for a range of chartered accountants in the south-east of England and also writes extensively on VAT for most of the leading tax publications in the UK, including Taxation and Tax Adviser. He has liaised closely with HMRC on many policy matters, particularly relating to the flat rate scheme, and is a member of the VAT technical committee of the ATT.

    Neil won the Taxation Awards Tax Writer of the Year in 2008, having been shortlisted the previous year. He is a fellow member of both the CIOT and AAT and also a member of the ATT. He was on the national CPD speaking circuit for eight years until his retirement in 2014.

    Therese advise Swedish and foreign companies in VAT issues. Therese is specialised and mostly hired when the Swedish Tax Agency’s files lawsuits against companies concerning VAT.

    Therese has experience from the Swedish Tax Agency, as a Law Clerk at the Stockholm Administrative Court, working with VAT for Mazars and EY, as well as other firms. She lectures paralegal law students at Påhlmans Institute of commerce. She has also published several articles in Bloomberg, in Svensk Skattetidning, and Legally Yours focused on VAT.

    Therese also gives advice when clients move into new markets or enters a new business field, and for the ongoing business. She also help her clients in obtaining advance rulings from the Swedish Skatterättsnämnden.

    Amanda has over 20 years’ experience in tax training and designs and writes the bespoke study manuals for the ADIT Energy Resources and Transfer Pricing papers as well as the classroom material for these papers.  She has also designed and written a lot of the classroom material for the ADIT paper 2.09 UK option and has reviewed the Paper 1 Principles of International Tax manual to ensure that it is syllabus focussed.

    Amanda uses a lot of humour in her classroom courses and has a very practical approach to both the law and the exams.

    Biography:

    Becky is a member of the Employment, Pensions & Immigration group and advises on all aspects of employment law, both contentious and non-contentious.

    On the contentious side, she has expertise in dealing with a broad range of employment tribunal claims, including unfair dismissal, discrimination on the grounds of age, sex and disability, part-time working and unlawful deductions of wages.

    Her non-contentious experience includes drafting and advising on a wide range of employment contracts, consultancy agreements and company policies and procedures.

    Lisa-Jane joined Tolley in 2010 to write and lecture on corporate and international tax matters, with a particular focus on the papers for the Advanced Diploma in International Tax (ADIT) offered by the UK Chartered Institute of Taxation.

    A graduate from the University of St Andrews, Lisa-Jane completed her Masters Degree in Law at City University and went into private practice as a barrister (Lincoln's Inn) before training in tax with KPMG at their Tax Business School. Once qualfied as a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) Lisa-Jane worked as a tax lawyer in the City, undertaking predominantly cross-border transaction work and banking, before joining EY in 2004 to work offshore in the Channel Islands. Whilst working there she sat the ADIT exams and gained her international tax diploma.

    When Lisa-Jane moved back to London she decided to use her overseas experience by teaching the Principles of International Tax, Transfer Pricing, UK and European Union options for the ADIT qualification, as well as the AT TOMC and APS TOLC papers for the CTA exams. Lisa-Jane also writes for the Tolley Corporation Tax Annual.

    After studying accountancy at the LSE, Roderick changed to the law and became a solicitor, and, until 1996, headed pension and employment law in the corporate/commercial firm KJD in Stoke-on-Trent, as the only pension law solicitor between Birmingham and Manchester. In that year he started his sole practice from home, specialising in pensions, largely helping other solicitors when they have pension law problems and need a specialist on their team or to whom to refer their clients. Roderick also contributes to New Law Journal and other LexisNexis publications. His leisure time is split between gardening, old cars and reading and writing.

    Ronnie is regarded as one of the UKs leading tax dispute specialists. Over the last 25 years Ronnie has specialised in the field of HMRC investigations and tax dispute resolution working alongside a broad range of clients, both corporate and personal. He has successfully assisted his clients to resolve a wide range of investigations, enquiries, disputes and disclosures and has built up an enviable reputation of obtaining some great results.

    More recently Ronnie has worked extensively in the sports industry where he has represented a number of leading sports clubs and professionals to resolve their outstanding issues with HMRC. He is regarded as a specialist in the area of the taxation of image right payments and has recently authored the relevant chapter in the latest edition of Sport: Law and Practice (Lewis Taylor).

    Ronnie is a regular lecturer at national tax investigations conferences and is one of a handful of Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) accredited mediators operating in the UK tax market.

    Prior to joining PwC Ronnie spent several years as a tax inspector with HMRC. He was seconded back to HMRC in 2011 where he worked with a team of senior HMRC policy officials on the Review of Tax Disputes. The outcome of this review led to, amongst other things, the publication of updated guidance on HMRCs Litigation and Settlement Strategy and the commencement of HMRC pilots on the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods to resolve outstanding tax disputes.

    Jenny Tragner is a Director and Head of Policy at ForrestBrown, leading the technical approach for the firm on all aspects of R&D tax relief.

    She is an experienced chartered accountant and ATT fellow with a wealth of expertise in all aspects of R&D tax. She specialises in supporting businesses with complex cases involving R&D reliefs, including dispute resolution and tax advisory projects.

    She began her career at KPMG in 2002 and has specialised in R&D tax for the past 15 years. In this time, she has advised many of the UK’s most innovative companies.

    Jenny is an expert in R&D tax policy and has contributed to numerous consultations on R&D tax relief over the course of her career.

    She co-authored the Tolley’s Tax Digest on R&D tax relief and is a regular contributor to publications including Taxation and Bloomberg Tax. In November 2022, Jenny was invited to give evidence to the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee inquiry into the incentive. She also contributes to TolleyGuidance Corporate module.
